Masonry is the foundation of enduring outdoor construction. Brick, stone, and block structures built with proper technique last for generations -- adding curb appeal, structural value, and architectural character that no other building material can match. At Evergreen Hardscaping, our masons bring over three decades of hands-on experience to every project across Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. From a simple mailbox column to a full stone veneer facade, we deliver precision craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
Brick & Stone Masonry Built Right
Masonry construction demands a level of skill and patience that few trades require. Every joint must be consistent. Every course must be level. Every stone must be selected for color, texture, and fit. At Evergreen Hardscaping, our masonry team has been honing these skills since 1996. We are NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) accredited and hold active contractor licenses in four states, which means we understand the building codes, frost-depth requirements, and material specifications that govern masonry work across the Mid-Atlantic region.
We handle both new construction and repair work. New projects include custom stone and brick walls, entrance columns, mailbox pillars, outdoor fireplace chimneys, front porch steps, sitting walls, and stone veneer applications on homes and outdoor structures. Repair work includes repointing deteriorated mortar joints, rebuilding cracked or leaning walls, replacing damaged brick and stone, and restoring chimneys that have suffered freeze-thaw damage over Delaware's harsh winters.
Every masonry project starts with a solid foundation. We pour reinforced concrete footings below the frost line (minimum 36 inches in Delaware) to prevent heaving and settling. We use Type S mortar for below-grade and high-strength applications and Type N mortar for above-grade face work. Flashing and weep holes are installed where required by code to manage moisture and prevent efflorescence.
Masonry Services We Provide
Stone & Brick Walls
Freestanding and structural walls using natural stone, brick, or concrete block. Garden walls, privacy walls, boundary walls, and sitting walls built with proper footings, drainage, and reinforcement. We build walls in every style -- from colonial brick to dry-stacked Pennsylvania fieldstone to contemporary split-face block. Sitting walls are a popular addition to patios and fire pit areas, providing permanent seating that eliminates the need for outdoor furniture.
Columns & Pillars
Masonry columns anchor driveways, walkways, and property entries. We build square, round, and tapered columns using brick, natural stone, and manufactured veneer over reinforced concrete cores. Columns can incorporate lighting fixtures, address plaques, mailboxes, and decorative caps. Properly built masonry columns require internal steel rebar, a poured concrete core, and a footing that extends below the frost line -- shortcuts in any of these areas lead to cracking and leaning within a few years.
Mailboxes
A custom masonry mailbox is one of the highest-impact curb appeal improvements a homeowner can make. We build mailbox columns in brick, natural stone, and manufactured stone to complement your home's architecture. Each mailbox includes a reinforced footing, internal steel reinforcement, a weather-resistant mailbox insert, and a stone or precast cap. We can integrate lighting, house numbers, and planting pockets into the design.
Chimneys & Fireplaces
We build new chimneys for outdoor fireplaces and repair existing chimneys that have suffered weather damage. Our chimney work includes proper flue lining, chimney caps, spark arrestors, and code-compliant clearances. For outdoor fireplaces, we construct the full chimney structure from the firebox through the crown, using fire-rated firebrick for the combustion chamber and matching stone or brick veneer for the exterior.
Steps & Stoops
Masonry steps provide a durable, attractive entryway to your home. We build natural stone steps, brick steps, and concrete block steps with proper footings, risers, and treads. Each step is pitched slightly forward for drainage and set on a continuous footing to prevent settlement. We also build full front stoops with integrated planters, railings, and lighting.
Stone Veneer
Stone veneer transforms the appearance of plain concrete, block, or frame walls. We install both natural thin-stone veneer and manufactured stone veneer on foundations, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and home exteriors. Proper veneer installation requires a scratch coat, metal lath, and mortar application that bonds the stone securely to the substrate. We also install cultured stone on interior accent walls when requested.
Masonry Repair & Restoration
Delaware's freeze-thaw cycles take a toll on masonry structures. We provide repointing (tuckpointing), crack repair, brick replacement, wall rebuilding, and chimney restoration. Our repair work matches the original mortar color, joint profile, and material as closely as possible, so the repair blends seamlessly with the existing structure. We also apply breathable masonry sealers when appropriate to extend the life of the repair.
Masonry Materials We Work With
From classic red brick to hand-selected natural stone, we work with the full range of masonry materials.
